PROCITE The first window envelope film to receive the Machine Readability Certificate from the Deutsche Post Europe PROCITE* window envelope film from The Dow Chemical Company recently became the first window envelope film to receive the Machine Readability Certificate from the Deutsche Post. This certification, part of the Automated Mail Certification Program, supports the use of PROCITE window envelope film for automated mail. In short run trials PROCITE achieved a level of 100% acceptance and in extended comparative evaluations (1000 items) both gauges of PROCITE (29µm & 32µm) gave the best results. The optical properties of PROCITE, in particular the haze-gloss balance, as well as the film flatness, have been specially designed to meet the postal operator's OCR sorting requirements. Numerous European postal operators have confirmed that even the most modest improvements in OCR reading rate results in important and significant cost savings. All OCR equipment users recognize the effect of gloss of the window film on OCR sorting equipment. The Committee of European Normalization (CEN) is currently issuing a European standard in which low gloss films are explicitly recommended for OCR reading. Previous sorting trials showed that the OCR reading rate can be improved by up to 10% compared to lower quality, glossy products. The different gauges of PROCITE, 29µm and 32µm, offer a choice to envelope manufacturers who want to balance product quality, manufacturing speed and raw material cost to meet their productivity target. With over 40 years of experience serving the postal industry, Dow now offers PROCITE window envelope film.
