Dow customers receive European Technical Approval for pipe systems made from DOWLEX™ 2388
Horgen, Switzerland - August 28, 2007 Two of the first European pipe manufacturers to seek approval to sell PE-RT (Polyethylene of raised temperature) type II pipe systems throughout the 30-country European Economic Area (EEA) recently received European Technical Approval (ETA) from EOTA (European Organisation for Technical Approvals), according to Dow Europe GmbH. With this approval and the resulting permission to use the CE marking, HPG Heizrohr Produktions GmbH and WRW Westfälische Rohrwerke GmbH are now authorised to sell their hot and cold water PE-RT pipe systems in the EEA without need for costly country-by-country approvals. Both companies specify DOWLEX™PE-RT 2388 resin in their approved pipe systems. “This good news for HPG and WRW is also of symbolic importance to other PE-RT pipe manufacturers with pan-European aspirations,” said Katja Wodjereck, Market Manager for Pipes, Geomembranes and Rotomoulding at Dow. “They are living proof that receiving permission to sell across Europe is no longer the formidable administrative and time-consuming obstacle that it once was.” HPG and WRW: Applications Based in Ratingen, Germany, HPG Heizrohr Produktions GmbH (HPG) is a family-owned, European-wide supplier of quality pipes for heating and plumbing applications. Based on DOWLEX™ PE-RT 2388, HPG has developed pipe system kits to perform under EN ISO 10508, classes 1 and 2 which recently obtained the ETA for PE-RT type II piping kits. Back in 2005, HPG already obtained the ETA and the right to affix the CE –Conformity Mark to their PE-RT Type I based heating pipe system kits WRW based in Ahlen, Germany is an innovative producer of PE-RT/Al/PE-RT multilayer pipe systems. The WRW multilayer system kits on the basis of PE-RT type II DOWLEX™ 2388 recently obtained the ETA to perform under the conditions of EN ISO 10508 and the specified system pressures. Obtaining the ETA permits WRW to affix the CE-Conformity Mark to their piping kits. The CUAPs for PE-RT Type I and II pipe systems were developed jointly between KIWA, a member of the European Organisation for Technical Approval (EOTA), and The Dow Chemical Company. Unlike the planned CE marking process under the Harmonized European Standard conditions, the ETAs are granted only after a full test program of the entire system, pipes and fittings - the kit , has been positively reviewed by a certified test institute. The CE marking under hEN is based on self declaration and does not involve a kit, the finally installed system. Remarkably metal fittings are not (yet) covered by the hEN, unlike the ETA based system kits. Effects on drinking water quality are not covered by the ETA s although it is still regulated on a country-by-country basis until the European Acceptance Scheme (EAS) for drinking water quality comes into effect. PE-RT Resins The family of DOWLEX™ PE-RT Resins has an over 25 year proven track record for delivering high performance in pipe applications. They provide excellent long-term hydrostatic strength without the need for cross-linking, saving producers both time and money. In addition, pipes made with DOWLEX™ PE-RT provide outstanding flexibility at low temperatures which make pre-heating no longer necessary, another feature which underlines the economic benefits of this family of products.
