Dow Declares Force Majeure for: Butyl Acetate, Propanol, Propionic Acid and Propyl Acetate

Midland, MI - September 29, 2008

The Dow Chemical Company ("Dow") announced on Friday, it has declared force majeure on Butyl Acetate, Propanol, Propionic Acid and Propyl Acetate all manufactured at the Texas City Operations (TCO). TCO is owned and operated by Union Carbide Corporation, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dow.

The plants manufacturing these products at Texas City were temporarily idled in preparation for Hurricane Ike and have remained idle following the hurricane for a planned maintenance turnaround. Hurricane Ike has caused curtailments in rail, truck and marine transportation and terminal services. Dow has recently learned that recovery from these curtailments is taking longer than anticipated and thus shipments of product from Texas City continue to be disrupted.

At this time we cannot determine the duration of these transportation-related delays and expect that this situation may present supply disruptions even after transportation services are fully restored.
