Interim Response Work Plan for Imerman Memorial Park

Background
The Interim Response Activities (IRAs) outlined in this document addresses the initial work to be taken in Imerman Memorial Park in Saginaw County. The actions outlined in this document were developed, and will be implemented, in cooperation with the MDEQ and park officials.

The Park
Imerman Memorial Park encompasses approximately 96 acres and includes public playgrounds, ball fields, roads, boat launch areas, open spaces, hiking trails, pet exercise areas, tennis, volleyball and basketball courts, children's play areas, shuffleboard, horseshoe pits, picnic pavilions, canoe rentals and fishing docks.

IRA Plans
The following actions are planned:

  • Hand Wash Stations were installed to reduce the potential for exposure.
  • The riverbank near the pavilion and floating dock will be stabilized to prevent further erosion;
  • Bare soil on walking trails will continue to be covered with wood chips;
  • Materials dredged from the river and stockpiled in the park near the boat launch will be transported and disposed at an approved off-site location;
  • The 'Bark Park' entrance will have vegetation planted;
  • The sides of the boat launch will be covered with stone; and
  • Grassy areas will be fertilized to promote grass growth.

Dow and parks officials received permit approval for an improvement project at Imerman Memorial Park, which will also minimize potential exposure to dioxins and furans. The project will focus on the eroding riverbank and unstable fishing platform, and is part of the corrective action process by Dow.

Workers will begin by reshaping the riverbank and adding erosion protection. The project also calls for improving the fishing platform, adding handicap accessibility and stabilizing the pavilion.
