Dow promotes Sustainable Chemistry as a solution to the most pressing global challenges
Toluca, Mexico - April 14, 2011
As part of the International Year of Chemistry, The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE:DOW), in conjunction with the Model Museum of Science and Industry (MUMCI), held a multi-disciplinary event yesterday. The event focused on the importance of chemistry as a sustainable solutions facilitator for some of the world’s toughest challenges, such as food, health, energy, water and transport.
The keynote speech, which was attended by engineering students from the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México (UAEM), as well as employees, partners and friends of Dow, was given by Luís Manuel Guerra, Founder and President of the Autonomous Ecological Research Institute (INAINE). During his speech, he talked about how Sustainable Chemistry is a catalyst for change, and one which focuses on finding innovative and long-term solutions to some of the world’s most pressing problems. He also gave a simple explanation of how chemistry has been and is part of our everyday lives.
Melissa Boisson, Public Affairs Director for Dow’s North Region of Latin America, explained how the company’s vision is focused on creating sustainable and innovative solutions which enable its customers, communities and individuals to significantly reduce their impact on the planet. In this way, The Dow Chemical Company plays a fundamental role in the value chain by providing solutions which meet some of our evolving planet’s needs.

In order to ensure that we have access to safe and abundant drinking water, to guarantee abundant food supplies and to ensure that we all have access to safe and clean energy; that is why generating sustainable solutions is of the utmost importance”, commented Melissa Boisson.
Guests had the opportunity to visit in the “Strange Materials” exhibition, of which, Dow is one of the international sponsors. This interactive exhibition showcased the wonders of applied materials-science and how these are used and have transformed our daily lives. Through a number of different work stations, visitors can learn about the properties of fluids, the resistance of tempered glass or the uses of “memory metals”, materials which might seem strange but that actually are found in a number of objects we use on a daily basis.
During the event, the finalists and the winner of “The Importance of Water” Dance Competition were announced. This is a project supported by Dow Mexico and the Universidad de las Américas Puebla (UDLAP) and aims to offer undergraduate students the opportunity to innovate and through a dance composition, showcasing a global challenge, such as the shortage of water, with the objective to raise awareness about the human beings’ capacity to positively transform their environment and be part of the solution.
This event is just one of the activities being held to celebrate the “International Year of Chemistry”. Dow is proud to be the first global sponsor of the International Year of Chemistry (IYC), declared by the United Nations as a global celebration of this branch of science’s contributions to humanity and its potential for finding solutions to global problems.
