Sterlington, Louisiana is home to Dow Sterlington, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company. Once the flagship production site for ANGUS Chemical Company, it continues to be the only company worldwide solely dedicated to the manufacturing and marketing of nitroparaffins and their derivatives.

Located on 80 acres in Ouachita Parish, Dow’s Sterlington facility produces more than 40 specialty products used in a wide spectrum of end-use markets.

Impact and Investment

The Dow Chemical Company provides a significant economic impact to the local region, employing approximately 275 full-time and contract employees at the Sterlington site.

The company has made numerous capital investments and expansions in the past several years, amounting to more than $50 million, and underscoring Dow’s strategy to invest for growth in its performance business.

January 2009 marked the completion of a $10 million market development facility that is helping Dow validate new-to-the world molecules the company is developing with its unique nitration process.

Community Giving

Dow’s Sterlington facility extensively supports community programs through financial grants and employee volunteerism. The site’s community grants program has provided more than a dozen non-profit organizations in the Sterlington area with grants totaling over $56,000 since 2005.

Dow is a leading sponsor of the Process Technology Lab (PTEC) at Louisiana Delta Community College, which prepares students to work as process operators in chemical, oil and gas, power-generating and pharmaceutical industries. Dow’s support for PTEC totals approximately $750,000 since the program began in 2006.

Dow’s Sterlington facility participate as volunteers for United Way, Keep America Beautiful, Sterlington’s DELTA Projects, Habitat for Humanity, and coordinate annual drives for food, winter clothing, and school supplies. Employees have also been visible in the local schools with “Science is pHun” demonstrations.

Awards and Honors

Dow Sterlington is a past recipient of the prestigious Lantern Award by Louisiana Economic Development (LED) and the Louisiana Industrial Development Executives Association (LIDEA). According to the LED, the Lantern Award recognizes Louisiana businesses who demonstrate excellence in manufacturing and community involvement. The Site was presented the Lantern award based on employment growth, facility expansion and community involvement.


As the original industry source for nitroparaffins, Dow’s Sterlington facility continues to develop and deliver distinct nitroalkane-based chemistries for customers in applications as diverse as paints and coatings, metalworking fluids, water treatment, biological buffers, solvents and thinners, wood adhesives, personal care and cosmetics, pharmaceutical and agricultural intermediates.
