DOWEX Resins for Separation of Manganese (II) from Liquid Media

Manganese (II) - Mn

Manganese (II) is the ionic twin of Fe (II). Its main uses are in alloy and steel formulation, the colorizing of glass, and in battery manufacturing.

Applications

Mining: In the context of commercial mining, the use of ion exchange resins for primary manganese collection is not currently practiced; however, several pilot operations have been evaluated. Heavy metals can be selectively removed from acid leach solutions using DOWEX™ M4195 resin (1). Removal from very strong acids (42KB PDF) may be effective using strong base anion exchange resin such as DOWEX 21K XLT resin.

Water/Wastewater: Manganese removal from water via ion exchange is common in chemical and petrochemical production, oil refining, semiconductor manufacturing, and power utility plants. In waters with low levels of dissolved salts, strongly acidic cation exchange resins such as DOWEX G-26 (H) cation exchange resin are employed. Weak acid cation exchange resins such as DOWEX MAC-3 resins often provide high capacity and good multi-valent ion selectivity. In more brackish waters, however, chelating / selective resins may be required. Chelating resins have reactive units dispersed along their polymer matrix, each of which have multiple metal binding sites. Hence, chelating resins are selective for multi-valent cations, over mono-valent cations like sodium and potassium.
