DOWEX Resins for Separation of Actinium, Thorium and Protactinium from Liquid Media
| |
| Elements |
| Actinium - Ac |
Thorium - Th |
| Protactinium - Pa |
Actinium, Thorium, and Protactium are extremely rare metals that occur naturally in uranium ores.
In HCl, protactinium is absorbed by DOWEX™ 21K XLT strong base anion exchange resin and has a low affinity for a strong acid cation resin like DOWEX G-26 (H) resin. Thorium, on the other hand, is strongly absorbed from HCl by a strong acid cation resin like DOWEX G-26 (H) resin and has a low affinity for a strong base anion exchange resin.
Actinium is not ionically active and, therefore, it is not amenable to ion exchange separations.
