DOW™ Ultrafiltration Membranes Help Reclaim Wastewater

Membranes are economical pretreatment answer to meet challenges of demanding raw water source

Edina, MN - December 23, 2008

In order to meet more stringent environmental protection requirements for the city of Beijing, YanShan Petrochemical installed DOW™ Ultrafiltration and FILMTEC™ reverse osmosis membranes to reclaim petrochemical wastewater. The Dow Chemical Company (Dow) modules are able to withstand the challenge of petrochemical wastewater treatment, which is high in chemical oxygen demand (COD) and contains a trace amount of oil.

Located in the Fangshan district of southwest Beijing city, the YanShan Petrochemical Co. has a crude oil refining capacity of 9.5 million tons per year, and an ethylene production capacity of 450,000 tons per year-the largest in China. Despite the high COD content in the raw water feed, the ultrafiltration modules produce permeate water with low turbidity and reduced COD content while still operating at a high recovery. Since 2004, the modules have produced water with silt density index (SDI) of less than three and turbidity less than 0.4 Nephelometric Turbidity Unit (NTU), enabling trouble-free reverse osmosis system operation.

This solution uses DOW Ultrafiltration SFP-2660 modules. To learn more about DOW Ultrafiltration, or view this case study in its entirety, please visit www.dowwatersolutions.com.
