Dow Water Solutions to Present Sustainability Solutions at First-Ever US-China Environmental Industries Forum

Edina, MN - October 20, 2008

Technologies that enable sustainable sources of fresh water, even in places where there is none, will be the focus of a panel presentation by Dow Water Solutions, a business unit of The Dow Chemical Company (Dow), at the first-ever U.S.-China Environmental Industries Forum on October 21, 2008 in Beijing.

Conducted through a cooperation among the U.S. Department of Commerce, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Chinese Ministry of Environmental Protection, the forum's objective is to bring government, industry and other stakeholders together to facilitate the development of policies and projects that address the country's key environmental and sustainability issues, including water, air and solid waste.

"As an industry leader in providing sustainable solutions that help solve many of the world's water supply challenges, we're well-positioned to help China provide water to its population and industry through water reuse, decentralized water systems and desalination technologies," says Lance Johnson, commercial director, Dow Water Solutions (DWS). Johnson, who is based in Shanghai, is slated to present during the water technology portion of the one-day conference.

Water reuse is an essential method for increasing the water supply, particularly for industrial growth, and it's an area where industry and government can work together, Johnson says. An example is in Beijing, where Dow worked with government agencies to install reverse osmosis membranes at three wastewater plants in anticipation of the 2008 Olympics. Today, Dow's FILMTEC™ reverse osmosis membranes are treating 45,000 m3/day of wastewater so the city can reuse more than half of its water.

"Globally, water reuse is expected to grow to 59.7 million m3/day by 2016," Johnson says. "To help meet this demand, Dow is working to lower the cost of water reuse even further through advances in ultrafiltration (UF), reverse osmosis (RO) membranes and other technologies."

Desalination plants to help meet manufacturing site demands and decentralized drinking water systems to provide fresh drinking water to China's villages will also be vital in helping China obtain sustainable sources of fresh water. Dow's UF and RO membrane technology is in use to produce 7,200 m3 of treated seawater per day to meet the manufacturing demands of China's WangTan power plant. Dow has also contributed advanced membrane technology for decentralized water treatment systems in Zhejiang Province, providing drinking water to more than 26,000 residents.

"As the world's largest manufacturer of reverse osmosis membranes, Dow is committed to catalyzing action among all stakeholders to enable attainable and affordable water sourcing and treatment options," Johnson said. "Dow also embraces the United Nations Millennium Development Goal to halve the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water by 2015."
