METEOR Ethylene Oxide 180 Catalyst

Dow's high productivity METEOR™ Etheylene Oxide (EO) 180 Catalyst has been in commercial operation for over three years and has produced over a million tons of ethylene glycol. It offers the highest efficiencies in the industry while also operating at the highest work rates.

EO catalysts currently available to the industry fall into two groups, generally referred to as high activity catalysts and high efficiency catalysts. The high activity catalysts operate at high work rates, but only deliver moderate efficiency performance. The high activity catalysts reduce catalyst cost, but at the expense of higher raw material costs.
High efficiency catalysts deliver better efficiency performance, but operate at low work rates. The high efficiency catalysts trade off lower raw material cost at the expense of higher catalyst cost.

The thrust of Union Carbide's catalyst program, which resulted in the development of METEOR EO 180 catalyst, was to deliver super high efficiency at high work rates. Dow's current EO catalyst program is to further drive towards increased efficiency while increasing activity. The benefits are two-fold: improved efficiency will reduce operating cost, while higher catalyst activity can be leveraged to reduce catalyst cost through longer life, or increased plant production.
