IMMOTUS Quiets The Night Owl
Upgrading of a private flat with German Housing Association

The Problem
Mr. C, who lives in a 50-year-old flat in Düsseldorf, owned by a housing association was having problems sleeping. He was often disturbed late at night by loud music and television noise coming from his neighbour's living room, which adjoined his bedroom.

Although the problem was long-standing it had not been treated. The space in the flats is very precious (the bedroom measured 2.5 x 4.0m) and existing methods of treatment would take up too much room. The Housing Association which owns the flats did not want the neighbour, Mr. F, to have to "live on a building site" while remedial work took place.

The Solution
IMMOTUS* R+ offered a solution which would reduce sound transmission with very little loss of space – the system is only 49mm thick when installed – and has a quick, clean installation process.

IMMOTUS R+ was applied to Mr. F's side of the party wall (the emission side). The party wall as well as the flanking wall consisted of pumic blocks (density said to be around 1,000 kg/m3) plastered to the wall on both sides; thickness was 380 mm. The flanking floor consisted of concrete elements. To ensure the best possible results, the carpet was lifted to enable IMMOTUS R+ to run from screed to ceiling, and a protruding beam at the top of the wall was also covered. Installation took four hours, including perimeter sealing and the filling and taping of joints.

The Outcome
Before treatment the airborne sound resistance (R'w) of the party wall was 47 dB – 5 dB below the level required for new build under Din 4109/89. After IMMOTUS R+ was installed the airborne sound resistance was 55 dB, an improvement of 8 dB.

More significantly, Mr. C regards the installation as successful as the noise from his neighbour has been considerably reduced.

Measurements were carried out by an independent acoustic consultant in Düsseldorf according to ISO 140-4 . The result after the refurbishment were expressed according to ISO 717-1:R'w (C,Ctr) = 55 (-2;-6) dB.
