The Problem
When Bar owner Mr. Mazzocchi wanted to move to new premises on Via Matteoti in Carpineto Romano (Rome) he found he would have to meet Italy's strict environmental noise regulations which forbid sound levels from adjacent buildings to exceed 45 dB: a serious problem when noise levels inside a bar may be as high as 80-90 dB. The situation was made worse by the limited space available in the rear of the premises, where a video games area was planned.

The Solution
Mr. Mazzocchi asked Sahura Engineering for proposals to meet the requirements. Besides recommending a number of changes to the existing structure, Sahura Engineering suggested the use of IMMOTUS* R+ on the walls and ceiling of the new bar. Not only would IMMOTUS R+ enable Mr. Mazzocchi to comply with regulations, but it would only add 49mm to the wall and ceiling thickness.

After preparation work for lighting and wiring, IMMOTUS R+ was applied to the two party walls and the ceiling. All ceiling beams and wall columns were enclosed with IMMOTUS R+. To maximise the benefit of the system and avoid acoustic bridges, it was agreed to fix an absolute minimum of the bar furniture through the IMMOTUS R+ boards.

The Outcome
During testing, noise levels in the hallways and flats adjoining the bar fell well below the 45 dB required by regulations, which meant Mr. Mazzocchi obtained his permit. Building control officials were so impressed with the results obtained with IMMOTUS R+ they decided to evaluate the system for use in other refurbishment projects with potential noise problems.
