Controlling Intrusive Noise

Building regulations require specified building elements to provide reasonable resistance to sound, including:
  • Airborne sound — generated within building spaces, for example by speech, stereos or televisions
  • Impact sound — generated by direct impacts upon building elements, for example footsteps or doors slamming
Traditional solutions to problems with airborne sound require massive constructions or the use of thick layers of sound absorbing material, whereas impact sound transmission through floors is treated by inserting resilient layers into the construction.

In many cases those solutions are impracticable, particularly in remedial and renovation work.
