Future Homes?

House
Housing may change radically in the coming decades as the need for energy and emissions reductions increases. Home buyers will not only be looking for architectural design and brilliance but environmental sustainability in houses too. A new concept arising from Northern Europe promises just that!

The concept of Passive Houses, originating in Germany in the early 1990s, is based on stringent guidelines for energy reduction and is a growing European trend. The objective behind the concept is to create a balanced environment to suit modern living.

Modern living is epitomized by environmentally friendly buildings and lifestyle. Products that adhere to or are created with sustainability in mind are essential.

Dow recently made it possible to achieve a 92% reduction in energy use. Dow products such as the STYROFOAM and STYROFOAM ROOFMATE were used in the construction of an Italian Passive House. By insulating the house with the products, the Passive House maintains suitable temperatures both in winter and in summer. Zero carbon emissions were also achieved. “Energy saving and Pollution reduction have become critical aspects of everyday life,” said Sergio Benetello, engineer and owner of the Italian Passive house.

Dow stands at the forefront of sustainability with its high standard innovative products. Redefining and enhancing its global operations has reinforced Dow’s commitment to efficient energy use and emissions reduction.

South Africans could especially benefit from Passive Housing as they are cost effective in the short and long term.
