Dow India Donates Science Lab to Municipal School Students

Continues its support of community outreach programmes in Navi Mumbai

Mumbai - February 08, 2010

As part of their commitment to support the welfare and growth of the communities in which it operates, Dow Chemical International Private Ltd. (Dow India) today inaugurated a state of the art science lab which has been donated to the students from Navi Mumbai Municipality Corporation school no. 55 as part of the company’s community engagement program for the Kalwa/Navi Mumbai area.

“Developing India’s next generation of scientists and innovators is not only key to the growth of our company, but to the future of India,” said Mahesh Gopalsamudram, site leader, Dow Formulated Systems in Kalwa. “By supporting projects like this in a community where so many of our employees live and work, we can provide students an opportunity to become passionate about science through specialised learning tools to help them excel in their scientific studies.”

Mr. Sadanand Waghmare, Principal, NMMC school no. 55, said: “We are very grateful to Dow India for donating this wonderful new science lab. Science is one of the most important subjects that our school offers. A career in science offers children from the locality a stimulating way to improve their lives, while at the same time benefitting society at large.”

NMMC School no. 55, located close to Dow’s polyurethanes system house (PUSH) and blending facility in Kalwa, is a government-funded school that offers affordable education to children from underprivileged background. The new state-of-the-art science lab was donated by Dow India in response to a special request by Mr. Sudhakar Sonawane, Corporator, NMMC and Mr. Mahendra Singh Thoke, NMMC’s Education Officer, who reported that the school did not have an existing science lab infrastructure.

This initiative is part of Dow India’s longstanding commitment to engaging with and fostering the communities in which it operates. Continuing its long association with local education, Dow India has supported the refurbishment of two Angan Wadis (Community Centres) in Kalwa, providing a safe and entertaining place for the community’s underprivileged children to gather for learning and play. Dow India’s Kalwa site employees also participated in a community tree plantation drive, donating tree guards for approximately 40 tree saplings near its facility.
