Dow Introduces New Polyolefin Materials for Steel Pipe Coating

Mumbai - November 10, 2009

Dow Europe GmbH (“Dow”) today introduced new top-coat and adhesive polyolefin materials for three-layer steel pipe coating systems.

DOW™ HDPE 12110G, a black high density polyethylene (HDPE) top-coat material, and AMPLIFY™ GR 320 Functional Polymer, a grafted adhesive resin will contribute to the long term corrosion protection of oil and gas pipelines.

The new Dow materials have demonstrated in industrial trials at customers that they meet stringent performance requirements for coating large diameter steel pipes when used in a three-layer coating system with a fusion bonded epoxy (FBE). External tests have shown that different coating systems using these materials exceed the requirements of the DIN 30670 and other national standards.

“When we entered into this new market segment we benchmarked our new materials with the current best offering to help ensure that we meet or even exceed their performance and aim to provide the requirements expected by the most demanding customers. As a global leader in Polyethylene we are commited to support the long term growth of the global Steel Pipe Coating industry said Katja Wodjereck, Dow’s market manager for pipe applications in Europe, the Middle East, India and Africa.

A three-layer steel pipe coating system comprised of DOW™ HDPE 12110G and AMPLIFY™ GR 320, together with an FBE bonded directly on the steel pipe, can help deliver good coating performance for the lifetime of oil and gas pipelines while also offering excellent processability on conventional pipe coating lines.

As a top-coat material, DOW HDPE 12110G in a three-layer steel pipe coating system offers excellent environmental stress crack resistance (ESCR), excellent physical properties and easy processing.

AMPLIFY GR 320, Dow’s adhesive, offers excellent adhesion to both the FBE and top-coat layers in a three-layer coating system, in addition to easy processing, mechanical strength at high and low temperatures, good temperature resistance and low water absorption.

The key objective of steel pipe coating is to prevent or minimize the possibility of pipeline corrosion as a result of extreme external conditions, mechanical impacts or degradation by heat or UV irradiation. To help meet this performance requirement, critical parameters for polyolefin materials used in three-layer steel pipe coating systems are excellent adhesion and adhesion retention, durability, crack resistance and long-term stability, together with low levels of built-in stress during the coating process.
