Dow Building Solutions (DBS) continues to receive external endorsements for energy-efficient products and solutions, most recently with the National Association of Home Builders (United States) Research Center Green Approved mark for DBS building envelope products, making Dow the first to have both its energy saving insulation and air sealing products eligible for meeting mandatory requirements or earning points under the U.S. National Green Building Standard.
In 2007 the NAHB and the International Code Council created a standard definition of what is meant by "green building." To streamline this process, the NAHB Research Center Green Approved mark is intended to assist builders, designs, and specifiers in identifying products that can contribute points toward building certification. Additionally, during field inspections it helps verify that the claimed "green" practices have been incorporated into the building. All DBS "Green Approved" products are pre-loaded onto the NAHB's online Green Scoring Tool, making it more convenient for builders to calculate points that could contribute to a Bronze, Silver, Gold or Emerald green building certification.
"The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that insulating and air sealing a home can save up to 20% of heating and cooling costs, and having DBS insulation and air sealing products NAHB-approved and pre-loaded into the NAHB tool takes the guesswork out of selecting which products will increase a home's Green Score," said John Hammer, residential market manager for Dow Building Solutions, North America. "Builders can use any DBS NAHB-Green Approved building envelope products and know their choice will help them either meet mandatory requirements or earn points and bring them closer to achieving their project's overall energy efficiency goals."
NAHB "Green Approved" products from Dow include all STYROFOAM™ Brand Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) Foam Insulation, the award-winning STYROFOAM SIS™ Brand Structural Insulated Sheathing, Dow polyisocyanurate insulation, STYROFOAM Brand Spray Polyurethane Foam Insulation, GREAT STUFF PRO™ Insulating Foam Sealants, ENERFOAM™ Professional Foam Sealants, FROTH-PAK™ Foam Sealant kit, and THERMAX™ Insulation.
STYROFOAM Brand XPS Foam Insulation and polyisocyanurate insulation products from Dow are also ENERGY STAR qualified, a U.S. government program designed to save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices . DBS has also begun converting facilities that manufacture STYROFOAM™ Brand Insulation to its new proprietary no-VOC, zero ozone-depleting foaming agent technology and is well positioned to complete conversion of its plants in advance of the Montreal Protocol deadline. The first plant converted to the technology in Dalton, Georgia relies on methane gas harvested from a nearby landfill to reduce the amount of fossil fuels typically consumed during production. The second Dow Building Solutions plant in Hanging Rock, Ohio, has also been converted.
