790 Jaipur Footprints Across Chennai
Limbs, Calipers and crutches provided at free camp by BMVSS and Dow India

Chennai, India - December 22, 2008

790 artificial limbs and calipers were provided to the physically-challenged people from Chennai and the surrounding region in a five-day camp, organized by Dow Chemical International Pvt Ltd in association with Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS). Overall a total of 716 patients were given a new lease of life in the Chennai camp, where more than 70 Dow India employees volunteered and worked tirelessly to make the entire initiative a success.

Talking about the experience, Vanaja who accompanied her handicapped mother at this camp said "Two years back my mother had lost her leg due to high diabetes, she hasn't walked since then. This camp has been truly a blessing for my family.  My mother can walk now and be independent again. We are very thankful to Dow India and BMVSS for making this happen. I request both the organizations to hold more such camps every year ".

The Chennai camp was the third and the last camp for the year 2008 organized by Dow India.  Prior to the Chennai camp, two more such camps were organized in Mumbai & Pune. Overall the Dow India's Jaipur foot initiative has today reached out to more than 1600 patients across Mumbai, Pune and Chennai.

As a part of its ongoing corporate citizenship programmes, Dow India has been associated with the Jaipur Foot initiative since 2005. In addition to committing financial resources to BMVSS, Dow India's polyurethane unit at Kalwa, Mumbai along with Pinnacle Industries has utilized its expertise to introduce the revolutionary Polyurethane (PU) Foot, which has been highly acknowledged by global orthopedic experts.

Both these organizations are currently working on the next generation polyurethane foot coated with a protective elastomer layer to enhance the life of the PU foot by 100%.  This is a unique example of co-development involving an NGO and a corporate organization working together for technological development which will benefit the masses.

Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS) Jaipur, set up in 1975, is the world's largest organization for the handicapped, benefiting more than one million handicapped in India and abroad, by providing artificial limbs, calipers and other aids and appliances since its inception.
