DOWTHERM™ A Is The Heat Transfer Fluid of Choice

Midland, MI - June 23, 2010

The Dow Chemical Company (Dow) will be displaying its expertise supplying high temperature heat transfer fluids to the Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) industry at the Fourth Annual Concentrating Solar Power Summit June 23 to 25, 2010 in San Francisco, California.

Dow will supply DOWTHERM™ A Heat Transfer Fluid for several Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) installations in 2010.  The new CSP plants will be located in Spain and the United States.  From 2007 to 2009, Dow has already installed large amounts of DOWTHERM™ A for CSP in these two countries.  Dow is a leader in chemistry and supply of heat transfer fluids for CSP with proven ability to manufacture and deliver large volumes of fluid to remote locations.

CSP uses parabolic mirrors to reflect and magnify heat from the sun onto a closed circulating loop containing DOWTHERM™ A heat transfer fluid.  The fluid collects the heat energy and transports it to a power station where it is used to produce steam, which drives turbines that generate electricity.

Solar power technology such as CSP offers many advantages in regions that require reliable new sources of energy.  The technology helps to diversify energy supply, is capable of producing power during periods of peak demand, and reduces dependence on fossil fuels.  When used instead of fossil fuel generation plants, CSP facilities offer improved air quality and can help many nations meet off-set goals for carbon emissions produced by existing fossil fuel power plants.

DOWTHERM™ A for CSP

DOWTHERM™ A is a specialized heat transfer fluid capable of accommodating temperatures of up to 400 degrees Celsius.  In addition to offering the right fluid chemistry and in-depth experience for CSP applications, Dow has the production capacity and logistics capabilities to supply the large quantities and meet tight delivery schedules typical of CSP projects, a capability few companies can match.
