Secondary-Loop Refrigerant Applications for the Food Industry

DOWFROST™ inhibited propylene glycol heat transfer fluid, when used in a secondary refrigeration system, can offer several advantages for super markets or grocery stores.

First, because primary refrigerant, which operates at relatively high pressure, is confined to equipment located in a mechanical room the potential for worker and store occupant exposure is greatly reduced. These systems also allow lower cost natural refrigerants like ammonia to be used with increased safety.

Second, because thousands of feet of copper tubing, and associated connections, are eliminated from the system, the potential for loss of containment by primary refrigerant is greatly reduced. This is the first way in which environmental foot print for a system can be reduced.

Third, because the total charge of primary refrigerant is reduced with a secondary loop system, the cost of using more expensive HFC or HFO refrigerants which offer significantly lower greenhouse warming potential will be significantly less. This also contributes to a smaller environmental footprint.

Chilling & Freezing

DOWFROST and DOWCAL™ N Inhibited Glycol-based Heat Transfer Fluids offer advantages in a variety of chilling/freezing and defrosting/dehumidifying applications. Breweries, wineries, dairies and fruit processors use DOWFROST and DOWCAL N Fluids to cool products during processing. They are also used by restaurants, bars, and in vending machines to cool liquid beverages.

The ingredients in DOWFROST and DOWCAL N Fluids are considered safe by the U.S. FDA food additive regulations1 for use in applications where incidental contact with food products or potable water is possible, including immersion freezing of wrapped meat, poultry, fish, seafood, vegetables, and fruit or winterization of RV plumbing systems. Both fluids are low in toxicity and odor, and virtually tasteless — important benefits in any food application.

Defrosting/Dehumidifying

DOWTHERM SR-1 and DOWCAL 10 inhibited ethylene glycol fluids are sprayed on refrigeration coils in walk-in freezers and cold rooms to help remove condensation and maintain optimum chilling efficiency. Glycols mix with condensation from the coils, lowering the freeze point of the water to prevent frost formation. These sprayed fluids can also remove moisture from the air to control humidity.
