An Overview of The Dow Chemical Company in Greater China

Dow first entered China in as early as the 1930s. Today, Dow operates 5 business centers and 20 manufacturing sites across Greater China with 3,900 employees. Dow's 2008 revenue in Greater China was US$3.3 billion. Greater China is now Dow's third largest market in sales, after the United States and Germany.

Dow is committed to the development in China through enhancing?local capabilities and building the regional business into a global hub. In 2009, a new propylene oxide-based glycol ethers facility came on line in Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu province, where Dow is already operating world-scale Latex, Epoxy and Polystyrene plants. Dow Epoxy Systems recently established its first manufacturing asset in Wuhan, China, supporting the growing demand in market segments such as composites, wind and infrastructure. Dow has also announced plans to establish a world-class liquid epoxy resin plant and a glycerine-to-epichlorohydrin (GTE) plant in Shanghai. With Dow's proprietary GTE technology, these plants will cut chlorine consumption in half and reduce waste water by ninety per cent compared with conventional technology.

In May 2007, Dow signed a Cooperative Agreement with Shenhua Group ¨C China's largest coal producer ¨Cand announced plans for a detailed feasibility study, bringing the two parties one step closer to building a world-scale coal-to-chemicals complex in Shaanxi Province.

A new Dow Center has been built in Zhangjiang High-Tech Park in Shanghai. The new Center is comprised of a state-of-the-art research and development facility, a global information technology center as well as administrative and support facilities. It will house up to 1,800 employees and will become a major business and innovation hub for Dow in Asia Pacific.

Dow is a globally respected leader in sustainability, and has been named to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index eight times. Dow has also been an active contributor to sustainable development in China, and seeks to set the standard for sustainability through maintaining highest standard of environment, health and safety excellence, providing sustainable and innovative products and creating game-changing collaborations.

Dow's Zhangjiagang site, Dow's core manufacturing base in China, was recognized as "The State Environment-friendly Enterprise" in 2006 by Ministry of Environmental Protection due to its excellence in safety and cleaner production.

In Sept 2008, MEP, the United Nations Environment Programme and Dow collaborated for a 2-year project to promote chemical safety and emergency preparedness in the chemical industry in China. In 2006, Dow partnered with the State Administration of Work Safety to launch a 3-year national project to promote safe management of hazardous chemicals. In 2005, Dow partnered with MEP and launched a 4-year project to promote Cleaner Production. Both projects have achieved significant environmental and economic results. Dow is also working with Lawrence Berkeley National Labs and China's Energy Research Institute to improve the energy efficiency of SMEs in China. The program will also include working with central and provincial governments to design policies to encourage businesses to improve energy efficiency.

In China, Dow remains committed to corporate citizenship. Dow was one of the first companies to respond within 24 hours after the Sichuan earthquake in 2008. The Company contributed RMB 10 million in cash and products to support the earthquake-stricken region. To communicate and teach sustainability to a younger audience, Dow also partnered with Junior Achievement to launch the "Our City" program, a program for primary school students to learn about the role of sustainability in the urban economy. Teamed with New York based Environment Defense Fund (EDF) and supported by Shaanxi Provincial Department of Agriculture , the Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction program in Shaanxi province established in 2008 aims to address the issue of climate change by introducing? environmentally beneficial land?management practices and biogas use technologies to local farmers.

In 2008, Dow received a number of awards recognizing its excellent corporate culture and a strong commitment to social responsibility.
