MAXISTAB DK-2n Stabilizer For Perchloroethylene SVG Solvent

MAXISTABâ„¢ DK-2n stabilizer is a specially blended formulation of stabilizers for use with Perchloroethylene SVG. Perchloroethylene SVG is a vapor degreasing grade of perchloroethylene. During use, vapor degreasing solvents are subjected to numerous environmental stresses which can lead to solvent breakdown and acidic conditions. Stabilizers are added to vapor degreasing grades of chlorinated solvents to neutralize acidic conditions and allow the solvent to continue to function properly. In low emission degreasing systems, stabilizers are depleted faster than they are replenished by the addition of fresh solvent. MAXISTAB DK-2n stabilizer for Perchloroethylene SVG can be used to raise the reserve alkalinity of the solvent.

Alkalinity Adjustment for Perchloroethylene SVG

Using the information from the Reserve Alkalinity Test, and the volume of solvent in the degreaser system, find the appropriate amount of MAXISTAB DK-2n stabilizer for Perchloroethylene SVG to add to the system. (See Chart 1 below.)

MAXISTAB should be added to the solvent reservoir so that it is quickly mixed into the solvent and will be rapidly distributed throughout the system.

After making the addition, allow the solvent to mix throughout the system, then retest the reserve alkalinity levels. The optimal operating range for alkalinity is between 12 and 20 ppm.

Alkalinity

The optimal operating range for alkalinity of Perchloroethylene SVG is between 10 and 20 ppm. MAXISTAB DK-2n stabilizer has been specially designed for alkalinity adjustments of Perchloroethylene SVG.

Acid Acceptance Test Result Action Required Test Freequency Recommended
Acceptable Greater than 8 ppm reserve alkalinity Contiune normal operations Test 1 to 2 times per week
Marginal Reserve alkalinity values between 4 and 8 ppm Add MAXISTAB for alkalinity Test daily until corrected
Unacceptable Less than 4 ppm reserve alkalinity Add MAXISTAB for alkalinity or change out solvent Test daily until corrected

Chart 1. Alkalinity Adjustment for Perchloroethylene SVG

  • Determine the alkalinity of the solvent using the Dow Reserve Alkalinity Test Kit.
  • Determine the volume of solvent in the degreaser system.
  • Using the volume from the graduated cylinder or the reserve alkalinity value, read the intersection of the line to obtain the milliliter conversion factor. The conversion factor times the volume of solvent in the degreaser determines how much MAXISTAB ALK stabilizer for Perchloroethylene SVG to add to the system.

  • For example, if you are operating a 125 gallon vapor degreaser and you obtain a reserve alkalinity test result of 4 ml (4.5 ppm reserve alkalinity):(Gallons of solvent in the degreaser system) X (Conversion Factor) Volume reading of 4 ml or reserve alkalinity of 4.5 ppm =1.7 milliliters conversion factor (cf)
    1.7 (cf) X 125 gallons = 212.5 milliliters of MAXISTAB DK-2n stabilizer
