| Chafing Rings |
Light colored areas on fabrics, particularly on lightweight, loosely-woven or dark-colored materials. Often the result of prespotted areas that have already been chafed. |
Chafing may be easily seen by holding a garment so you can look across its surface. Disturbed fibers will protrude above the material. Affected areas often take on a grayish or dusty cast. |
Minimize prespotting procedures involving mechanical action on fabrics susceptible to chafing. Some improvement may be obtained by lightly going over the surface with an electric razor and/or applying 1 part mineral oil and 12 parts solvent. |
Prespotting |
| Dry Rings |
Droplets of condensed solvent on dried garments. High nonvolatile content will also contribute. |
Occurs mainly on relatively nonabsorbent smoothly constructed fabrics such as coat linings, silks and synthetics. Droplets of solvent have been trapped in lint accumulations and in door gaskets and are spun or blown free and onto the fabrics. |
Keep confined areas in the drying tumbler free of lint. Reduce nonvolatile content by distilling on the basis of 4-6 gals/100lbs of clothes. |
Dryer. |
| Residual Rings |
Excessive use of wet-side spotting solutions on whites and light-colored garments, particularly cottons. Low detergent charge will also contribute. |
Because the solvent coloring matter (grease, oil, fatty acids, dye, etc.) has an affinity for water, moistened areas on the fabric can absorb some of the contaminants and cause a residual circle. |
Prespot light-colored fabrics sparingly and only when absolutely necessary. Maintain recommended detergent concentration. |
Wash solvent |
| Sizing Rings |
Solubility of finishing agent in solvent and/or water. Sizing may also be disturbed by mechanical action during pre-spotting. |
Garments constructed of acetate, rayon or a combination of these yarns may contain sizing. Disturbance of sizing can often be identified by the presence of a whitish cast. |
If the affected area is not extensive, treat with amyl acetate on the reverse side. This may dissolve the finish and redistribute it evenly over the interface of the fabric. |
