Centenarian Program Honors Maines

Gaylord Maines

Gaylord “Grannypop” Maines – now 102 – attended the October Union Carbide reunion in Charleston, West Virginia, and he was recognized there as part of the Centenarian Program. What an extraordinary event, to return to the city where he spent most of his adult working life to approach another momentous milestone!

Gaylord spent a great deal of his working career at Union Carbide’s Chemicals and Plastics Division in South Charleston as a first class machinist, retiring in 1965.

Gaylord celebrated his 100th birthday in Knoxville, Tennessee, in 2009 with more than two dozen members of his extended family at a party attended by the Carbide Retiree Corps’ South Region Director Joe Vogt.

Gaylord enjoys being a member of the flying club of Raynick, Kentucky; spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; mowing the lawn; tending his garden of tomatoes, corn and beans; and keeping up-to-date with the newest computers and cameras.
