Ford Brown, Sr. – FAMEously Healthy in the Piney Woods of Texas

Brown walks a mile several days a week, over and around the hills in the beautiful Piney Woods. His doctor tells him he is the healthiest 90 year old they have ever examined!
Submitted by Iva Nell Brown
Ford Brown, Sr. retired from Dow’s Texas Operations site in Freeport in 1982 after a total of 27 years of service as a pipe-fitter/welder. He joined Dow in 1940, but his time at Dow was interrupted when he enlisted in the Marines and served in World War II. These days, Mr. Brown, now 93 years of age, lives with his wife, Iva Nell, in East Texas. He walks a mile several days a week, over and around the hills in the beautiful Piney Woods. His doctor tells him he is the healthiest 90 year old they have ever examined!
Their son, Ford Brown, Jr., (also a Dow alumnus) lives nearby, and Mr. Brown helps his son with his large chicken-raising operation. He takes care of the heaters for the chicken houses that house over 80,000 chickens, and uses his tractor to help with other work around the farm. He and his son also do a lot of fishing together; on their last trip, they caught between 20 and 30 bass and perch (depending on whom you talk to)!
Mr. Brown also enjoys gardening. He has planted squash, tomatoes, eggplant, and other vegetables every year since he retired, so he and Mrs. Brown never lack for fresh vegetables!
Mr. Brown is a terrific neighbor; he takes his tractor and pulls cars out of ditches after a big rain that washes out the dirt roads in their area. He stays involved with his church and teaches helps teach Sunday school.
