Dick Arnold – FAMEously Healthy Hokie!

Dick Arnold

Dick works for Global Ministries, the world wide mission arm of the United Methodist Church. He developed their partnership program, called IN MISSION TOGETHER, between churches in the U.S. (over 400) and Eastern Europe and the Balkans.

Dick Arnold retired from Union Carbide’s Danbury site after almost 40 years of service at five locations in engineering, plant management, consulting and public affairs.

FIT- Dick cares for his wife of over 50 years, Sally, and has learned to cook healthy meals and perform other household chores that she faithfully did for him for so many years, in addition to managing medications and doctor appointments. He maintains their house and yard, visits the gym 2-3 times weekly to walk two miles and use the exercise equipment, and walks 18 holes of golf three days a week.

ALERT- Dick reads several daily newspapers (sharing the crosswords puzzles with his wife) and magazines daily, and is usually in the middle of reading a book. He is an avid sports fan, attending and supporting many of the games of his beloved Virginia Tech Hokies teams, where he is a member of their Sports Hall of Fame. He participates in several weekly bible study groups.

MOBILE- Dick works for Global Ministries, the world wide mission arm of the United Methodist Church. He developed their partnership program, called IN MISSION TOGETHER, between churches in the U.S. (over 400) and Eastern Europe and the Balkans. He travels overseas and across the U.S. as an advocate for this ministry. He and Sally also travel to visit their children and grandchildren.

ENGAGED- Dick serves on the advisory board for Virginia Tech’s College of Engineering and was inducted into their very exclusive Academy of Engineering Excellence in 2010, and just completed a term on the Advisory Board of the Industrial & Systems Engineering Dept. (member of their Academy of Distinguished Alumni). He is a long time Board member of the Virginia Tech German Club Alumni Foundation, a fraternal organization dedicated to leadership and service. Dick serves as Chairman of the New River Leading Lights, a community-wide organization of non-profits, public schools, government, faith organizations and area colleges and universities dedicated to volunteerism and to honor about 50 local volunteers per year at an event that memorializes the 2007 Virginia Tech campus shootings. He is an active lay member of the Blacksburg United Methodist Church, and coordinates their two ministries in Kiev, Ukraine; one with street children, and one with an emerging church.
