Dow announces 2007 Heritage Grant recipients

Texas - May 10, 2007

Eight local community groups have been named the recipients of 2007 Heritage Grants, worth up to $25,000, from The Dow Chemical Company, Texas Operations.

The company’s Community Grant Program is a competitive process that results in funding for one-time projects that demonstrably contribute to community success in Southern Brazoria County. Twenty six groups applied for Heritage Grants. The selections were made by a committee made up of Dow employees as well as external community members.

“The quality of the applications was extremely high,” said community relations manager Trish Ritthaler. “It was very difficult for the committee to make their decisions, but they certainly chose projects that will have a long-term positive impact in our area.”

Billye Riggs Downing submitted a successful grant application on behalf of the Brazoria Heritage Foundation for $22,000. The funds will be used to repair and renovate the gymnasium section of the 1933 Brazoria School Complex and purchase fitness equipment for the development of a recreation center. The center will feature indoor and outdoor sports, an exercise room and arts and crafts activities.

“It is so important for our community, particularly our youth, to have something constructive to do with their spare time,” says Riggs Downing. “We want it to be the real heart of our community and we’re so excited that Dow is providing this funding to make our dream a reality.”

Another $16,490 is being granted to the Brazoria County Work Activities Center to enable them to purchase two new laundry machines.

“Because of this funding, we can now offer more employment opportunities to our ever-increasing number of clients and expand our commercial laundry service to the business community,” says executive director Ginger Chitwood. The group’s application notes having new, better equipment will provide its clients with a greater source of income while continuing to teach the social and adaptive skills necessary to live successfully at home and participate in community life.

A $22,990 grant will be provided to Communities in Schools of Brazoria County for 21st Century Science for the Future program to promote science education. The funds will be used to train CIS-BC staff and to purchase two mobile labs featuring fun, hands-on activities in engineering and robotics for Grades 3-12 students. These after-school and summer programs will provide opportunities for youth to design and build projects that will increase their skills in communications, teamwork and critical thinking and encourage them to master technological literacy concepts.

Other Heritage Grant recipients are:

Brazoria County Youth Homes - $25,000 to complete the “Raising the Roofs” project – the construction of an additional cottage to house abandoned, abused and neglected youth.

Faith in Action of Brazosport - $18,595 to purchase tools and a trailer for the group’s home repair and maintenance projects for the chronically ill, elderly and disabled in the Brazosport area.

Boys and Girls Club of Brazoria County – $25,000 to create a shared fitness course in partnership with O.A. Fleming Elementary School in Freeport in order to promote physical activity and good nutrition for youth.

Women’s Center of Brazoria County - $10,815 to replace windows at the organization’s shelter in order to reduce energy costs.

Zeta Xi Foundation - $11,592 for the purchase of a walk-in cooler and enclosure providing storage for perishable food to be distributed to needy families in the Brazoria, Damon, Sweeny, Old Ocean and West Columbia areas.

“We’re very proud to be able to support organizations like these that provide such valuable services and programs to their communities,” says Ritthaler. “The long-term benefits the communities will gain from their projects will be felt by many and that is what Dow’s Community Grants Program is focused on accomplishing.”

Dow’s grant program was initiated in 2005 and has provided more than $500,000 in funding to local community organizations.
