2005 Dow Community Grants Winners Announced

Texas - July 27, 2005

The job of enhancing the quality of life in southern Brazoria County just got easier for 17 local non-profit organizations after winning more than a combined $182,000 in the 2005 Dow Texas Operations Community Grants Program.

"The winners will be working on some very exciting projects this year," said Bill Ghant, community relations manger for Dow Texas Operations. "Each organization identified a social, economic or environmental need in our community and had a solid, sustainable plan to do something about it. I can't wait to see their completed projects."

Almost 40 organizations vied for the competitive grants, from which a panel of Dow and community judges selected the winners. Since it began in 2004, the Dow Texas Operations Community Grants Program has distributed more than $362,000 to help fund 36 projects for local non-profit organizations.

"The Community Grants Program gives us the ability to work with the community on identifying smaller, high-value projects," said Ghant. "Dow is committed to enhancing the quality of life in our neighboring communities and our charitable giving and the Community Grants Program ensure that we can make a positive impact."

Local non-profit organizations are invited to compete for one of two grants. The "Diamond" Grant is worth up to $5,000 and the "Living. Improved Daily." Grant has a maximum gift of $25,000. Projects that impact a large number of people and emphasize visible and sustainable improvements are the most competitive in the selection process.

The Brazosport Medical Center's project to renovate a recently donated building won a "Living. Improved daily." Grant. The Center, which serves more than 7,000 people annually who are on Medicaid or without health insurance, is in urgent need of the extra expansion space.

"Our current building is maxed out, so receiving a building from Dr. Paul Bernard was a godsend," said Dr. Michael Gemignani. "But that building needs to be worked on before we can use it. When it's finished it will allow us to expand our medical clinic, give more opportunities to our providers and patients and give us more space to provide services."

The Brazoria County Youth Homes (BCYH) won a "Diamond" Grant for its proposed project to build a covered pavilion, which will be named after the organization's former director Ann Huey. The BCYH was established to meet the needs of abused, abandoned and neglected children by providing long-term residential and support programs.

"A covered pavilion will allow us to have sporting events and a place for large groups to meet," said Vickie Anderson, Executive Director of the BCYH. "We have a tennis court used mainly for basketball, but the rain and debris makes it dirty and slippery. We don't have a group meeting place, so when an organization comes to do something with the kids we have to gather on the parking lot. We're very excited about the expanded activities our new covered pavilion will provide."

Dow Texas Operations will continue the Community Grants Program in 2006, which will be the third year the site will seek to identify small projects with big benefits.

"This isn't solely about Dow," said Ghant. "This program is about how a collaborative effort can bring dramatic and much needed enhancements to our community through non-profit organizations."
