Sea Center Texas
Located in Lake Jackson, Sea Center Texas offers the unique opportunity to touch a Texas blue crab or watch Gordon the grouper swim around.
A partnership among The Dow Chemical Company, the Coastal Conservation Association and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has resulted in a one-of-a-kind marine fish hatchery and visitor's center. Hosting thousands of visitors each year, the 15,000-square-foot facility, which opened in March 1996, houses multiple aquaria and educational displays of the marine life of Texas bays and Gulf waters. Seawater is pumped five miles from the Gulf to accommodate the more than 60,000 gallons of aquaria used in visitor center exhibits.
The center is the largest red drum hatchery in the world used to produce larvae for stocking grow-out ponds and conducting research on stressed fish stocks from Texas waters. The facility produces 20 million red drum fingerlings annually.
Redfish and the spotted sea trout populations in Texas waters had seen a dramatic decline in the 1980s, but thanks to redfish and trout harvested on Dow property, these species have yielded a huge recovery. Millions of fingerlings have been released back into Texas waters since the center opened its doors. More than 100,000 people visit the hatcheries each year.
Local volunteers, many of which are Dow retirees, conduct tours of the facility. We are open every day from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm except for Monday. For more information call 979-292-0100.
