Dow to Host “First Sunday” event at Louisiana Arts & Science Museum
Louisiana - February 20, 2006
On Sunday, March 5th, Dow will serve as host for the Louisiana Arts & Science Museum’s “First Sunday” activity. From 1pm – 5pm on that date, visitors will enjoy free admission to the museum and planetarium galleries, and reduced admission to planetarium shows.
Among the activities that will be available as part of the free admission:
- Science Station – A Bugs’ Eye View – Kids can see the world through a bug’s eyes and take home a free glow-in-the-dark insect. In addition, Science Station features educational games and interactive exhibits on life science, earth science, physical science and math. Visitors can dig for fossils, test the speed of sound, work a giant gear wall, and much more. Science Station also has a large section of petrified wood from a Louisiana tree that lived 45 million years ago, computer stations complete with science-related games, and many mind-teasing puzzles.
- Discovery Depot – Buggy Butterflies – Kids can create colorful butterflies inspired by the star of the planetarium’s newest large-format film, Bugs! A Rainforest Adventure. Children are limited only by their imaginations in Discovery Depot. Designed for children ages 6 months to 9 years, this gallery includes educational toys and activities that encourage children to make connections between art and play. In the main activity space, children ages 4 and up can enjoy everything from building with blocks to pretending with puppets. A playhouse, train set, and several role-playing opportunities are favorites. Toddler Tracks is for children 6 months to 3 years. Little ones and their adults will enjoy climbing the steps to the train or hiding away in our "tree house."
- Science is pHun – Exciting science demos sure to excite kids of all ages, compliments of Dow.
- Solar System Gallery – Walk on the sun and weigh yourself on the moon and the planet Pluto. Here, you can meet Galileo and Isaac Newton or touch a fallen star – a meteorite a billion years older than any earth rock. You will discover how the planets got their names, and why we live on the luckiest planet in the solar system.
- Planet Tower – The new building addition features a series of glass windows to invite passers-by to explore the exhibitions within. The glass Planet Gallery reaches 2-stories high and is filled with nine giant planet models built to scale. Here visitors will meet a Saturn with rings nearly 15 feet wide and an earth model the size of a bowling ball.
- Universe Gallery – View images from the Hubble Telescope, the sky tonight, or programs relating to LASM’s current art exhibitions on the Minolta MediaGlobe. This full-colored, all-sky computer graphic projection system can project virtually any image that can be rendered on a desktop computer onto its 15-foot dome.
Available at reduced admission costs:
