Dow Volunteers Help Habitat’s Operation Home DeliveryLouisiana - November 30, 2005
Dow Louisiana Operations volunteers came out for the house blessing and the first days of the Habitat for Humanity Operation Home Delivery build on November 21st. Former New Orleans resident Traemel Day, 27, lost her home in the flood waters of Hurricane Katrina. Day is the first local recipient of Operation Home Delivery, a program sponsored by the non-profit organization Habitat for Humanity, which provides low-income housing for people who make too much money to qualify for traditional government housing. House frames and materials for four homes were loaded onto barges in St. Paul, Minn., and then sent down the river to St. Louis and Memphis, where more materials were added, before arriving in Baton Rouge for construction. The lots for the houses are along Fountain Avenue, which is off Starboard Drive near Gardere Lane and Burbank Drive. Dow, Whirlpool and Citigroup are major sponsors of this national program which is geared toward providing affordable, decent housing for partner families impacted by Hurricane Katrina. You can learn more about the program and check out the status of the barge by logging on to http://www.habitat.org/disaster/2005/katrina/stories_jt/. Dow is a national sponsor of Habitat’s Operation Home Delivery project that is delivering "houses in a box" to the Katrina and Rita impacted areas. The project entails the assembly of houses by many of Habitat’s affiliates across the country and delivered to affiliates in the impacted areas. Four of these homes will be assembled via a Blitz Build scheduled for November 27-December 3, 2005. The rest of the homes will be delivered in the New Orleans area for future assembly. Under the same effort more homes are being planned to be built on the Westside in the spring of 2006. For Editorial Information:
