Education Initiatives
Dow provides employees for Career Days, Science Fair judging, mentoring, guest lectures, senior interviews, and a day with an engineer. Job shadowing opportunities for both students and teachers are offered as part of the school-to-work partnerships with the local school systems.
Back To School on the Westside (offered to K-12 students)
Dow and The 100 Black Men of Metro Baton Rouge team up to co-sponsor a Back to School program geared toward motivating K-12 students in Iberville and West Baton Rouge parishes as they prepare for the school year. Attendees hear motivational speakers, learn helpful study tips, receive starter-kits with needed school supplies and are offered free school immunizations.
Hands-on-Science (offered to elementary school students)
This unique method of teaching science is offered to elementary school students in East Baton Rouge, Iberville and West Baton Rouge parishes through a $500,000 contribution from Dow. Every student can be successful in this hands-on program.
Science is pHun (offered to 4th-8th grade students) A one-hour demonstration designed to:
- show that science can be fun
- science is part of everyday activities
- discuss utility of chemicals
- common theme: mixtures and solutions
- include experiments that can’t be done in schools
Process Control Technology Scholarships (offered to graduating seniors)
Dow offers two $2,000 Process Control Technology Scholarships to graduating seniors who plan to attend Baton Rouge Community College. To qualify, students must have a 2.0 or better average and a 19 ACT score. One scholarship is given to a student in the Iberville Parish school system and one to a student in the West Baton Rouge Parish school system.

National Merit Scholarship
Dow contributes money to the National Merit Scholarship Program but is not involved in the selection. Students must take the SAT test in their junior year of high school to be eligible for consideration. Dow honors winners of the National Merit Scholarship whose parent is a Dow employee with 5 shares of Dow stock and a lunch with the Site Leader and parents.
Educational Enhancement School Grants (offered to educators)
A total of $24,000 is awarded annually in $2,000 grants to educators in Assumption, Iberville and West Baton Rouge parishes for innovative and creative projects in science and math.
