Wild Game Sampling Study

The U.S. Department of Agriculture collected deer, turkey and squirrel samples from three separate locations, under a plan to sample wild game that was developed by Dow and conceptually approved by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ).

The wild game sampling is in response to community requests. Under the plan, deer, turkey and squirrel samples were collected from two locations in the Tittabawassee River area south of Midland, and from a third, control location north of Midland. The animals were collected under specific permits for scientific purposes. Tissue samples were analyzed for dioxins and furans, and results were compared to the reference site and to background dioxin/furan levels in the national food supply for the same or similar species.

Results (171KB PDF) from the sampling are available for download. Also, a copy of the press release, which gave a high-level overview, is included. For more information about the wild game sampling program, you can download the full work scope (141KB PDF).

An explanation and results of the full study (5MB PDF) is also available to download.
