Reducing Hazardous Compounds and Waste
In keeping with our ongoing commitments to reduce waste and improve our safety performance and reduce the risks associated with our operations, the manufacturing processes at Dow Ludington continue to evolve, resulting in less hazardous waste generation and less hazardous material transport and handling.
Some of our successes include the elimination of the following hazardous materials from our processes:
|
|
|
- Silica-based abrasive blasting media
- PCB fluids in electrical transformers
- Chromium based refractory materials
- Chlorine and bromine
- Hazardous solvents such as ethanol and 1,1,1-trichloroethane.
|
We have also reduced both the concentration and the amount of hydrochloric acid in use at our site and produce only a fraction of the amount of return brine that we did in the past.
In addition, our site has an aggressive recycling program, which includes everything from cardboard, fluorescent lights and dry-cell batteries to used antifreeze, degreasing solvents, oil and oil filters.
