Message from Union Carbide CEO, John DearbornAll of us who witnessed the devastation inflicted by Hurricane Katrina cannot help but be moved by the scale of this heartbreaking disaster. Our thoughts are with everyone in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama who has been affected by the tragedy. At Union Carbide and Dow, our first priority was to locate all of our employees in the affected areas and to help ensure their personal safety. Thankfully, all of our employees in the affected regions are safe. However, many Union Carbide and Dow people — particularly those at our sites in Louisiana — suffered substantial personal loss from the hurricane. Dow and Union Carbide have mobilized to address the immediate needs of employees in the affected regions. Our efforts have included temporary housing for more than 170 employees, access to interest-free loans, counseling and health services. If you are a Dow or Union Carbide employee who needs assistance, please visit the Hurricane Katrina - Dow and UCC Information Center site. All assistance programs available to you are listed there. The web site will also continue to host the most recent information on operations at the affected sites. Our preparations in the Gulf Coast area prior to the storm paid off. There were no injuries, incidents or releases at the Union Carbide and Dow facilities affected by the storm. As we continue to bring plants back on line, our focus must remain on the safety of our operations. Both Louisiana sites — St. Charles Operations and Plaquemine — have maintained an unwavering focus on the safety of employees and the communities throughout the entire situation. I would like to offer my personal thanks to everyone at Union Carbide and Dow who has worked diligently to ensure that the integrity of our operations remained intact. Even as personal lives were being disrupted before and after the storm, our employees unselfishly stepped up to the task of ensuring the safety of our operations. Dow and Union Carbide's role in the affected communities extends far beyond our fencelines. In addition to the $1 million cash donation by Dow to the American Red Cross as part of its $3 million pledge to hurricane relief efforts, Union Carbide and Dow people are working with the local communities to assist with relief efforts. We have loaned generators to a local hospital and other critical businesses to get them running prior to power restoration. We have loaned cargo containers to shuttle supplies to impacted areas, among other contributions. We should all be proud of our efforts to date and remain committed to the long-term recovery of these vital communities where we live and work. John Dearborn < Back |
