Working for Wildlife![]() The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority is a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of the natural resources of the St. Clair region. In October 2001, the SCRCA received a $150,000 cheque from the Ontario Great Lakes Renewal Foundation for a major habitat restoration project at The Dow Wetlands. The Foundation committed the funds to be utilized over a two-year period for tree planting and the creation of additional wetlands and prairie habitat. This funding enhances the more than $300,000 Dow had already committed to create 20 more acres of wetlands and prairie adjacent to the already existing Wetlands site. This addition includes a large pond, ephemeral pools and waterways and prairie habitat with additional walking trails. In 2002, 1800 trees will be planted in this area. Some of the money from the grant will be used to join the Talfourd Creek wildlife corridor and the Dow Wetlands with land at Dow's Hydrocarbons Storage and Distribution Unit and woodlots owned by Dow. The first phase of this work includes preparing the land and planting over 11,000 trees and shrubs at Dow's Hydrobarbons Storage and Distribution unit. Species include cedar, spruce, pine, maples, ash, oak, hickory, nannyberry, cranberry, dogwood and elderberry. The SCRCA will coordinate the work, including the construction of additional wetlands, tree planting, tall grass prairie planting, the development of woodlot management plans and public trails. Staff from the SCRCA provide outdoor education classes to school groups and other organizations. When completed, this project is expected to contribute to de-listing the St. Clair River Area of Concern (AOC) - one of 16 AOCs identified for restoration around the Great Lakes by the International Joint Commission. The Ontario Government established the Ontario Great Lakes Renewal Foundation in 1998 with a $5 million initial grant. As a non-profit charitable organization, the Foundation's mandate focuses on Ontario's 16 AOCs. The Foundation supports the work of organizations and corporations who are working to improve the environment within AOCs. |
