2006 Community Grants Program

The Community Grants Program provides Dow with an opportunity to fund projects that have a significant impact in the community, but may not be eligible to receive contributions support through Dow’s regular community investment program.

The program encourages local organizations and non-profit groups to submit funding proposals for community-based projects and initiatives that promote long-term sustainability. The application deadline for Fort Saskatchewan proposals is April 30, 2006. The deadline for Prentiss is April 14, 2006.

A committee comprised of Dow personnel and community representatives will review the proposals and select successful projects and organizations by the end of June.

Habitat for Humanity
Dow Canada and employee volunteers have been working with Habitat for Humanity since 1990. In June 2004, Dow employees in Fort Saskatchewan will help build a home in Edmonton, Alberta, donating time, energy and STYROFOAM* brand insulation. Through 2005, The Dow Chemical Company is committed to supplying $5 million of STYROFOAM for the next 25,000 Habitat homes built in North America.

Fort Air Partnership Air Quality Teacher Resource Kits
In line with Dow's commitment to hands-on education, the Fort Saskatchewan site contributed $50,000 to the Fort Air Partnership (FAP) to help spread air quality awareness throughout the region. In partnership with FAP, Alberta Environment and the Elk Island and Sturgeon School Boards, Dow's contribution is funding the creation of air quality teacher resource kits for use at the junior high level. Called Air - Our Invisible Connection, this unique educational project integrates air quality learning components in Alberta Education's junior high curriculum and the activities of various stakeholders in the local community. Through lesson plans, a website, a video and posters, students will learn how they can actively contribute to improved air quality and the roles that industry, the community and government plays in managing air quality.

Chrysalis
Through a new multi-year funding partnership with Dow, Chrysalis clients now have more economical access to safety equipment for their work at job training sites. A three-year, $30,000 funding commitment will create the Dow Safety Locker, a storage cabinet permanently stocked with a variety of personal safety items that can be accessed by clients. Funding will purchase standard safety equipment, such as hard hats, safety glasses, coveralls and steel-toed boots, which are required at many industrial work sites.

Past Dow funding helped revitalize Chrysalis' volunteer training and resource. Dow's Fort Saskatchewan site also serves as a work placement site for Chrysalis clients, where they gain various levels of work experience, acquire life skills through interactions with others and build self-esteem from a job well done.

Fort Saskatchewan West River's Edge Wetland and Conservation Area
Dow is helping the City of Fort Saskatchewan to create the West River's Edge Wetland and Conservation area through a $170,000 project contribution. Funding from Dow is being used to create a trail network within the area that will include several interpretive viewpoints. The project will create a new ecosystem through land reclamation and will provide residents of Fort Saskatchewan with various educational and recreational opportunities.
