Creating Economic Value

Dow Chemical Canada is a positive contributor to the Canadian economy. We transform Canada’s hydrocarbon resources, such as natural gas, into value-added products that can be used within our domestic economy, or sold internationally. Additionally, Dow Canada enables Canadian businesses to access The Dow Chemical Company’s full global portfolio of chemical and plastics products and services.

Basic chemicals and plastics produced at Dow’s facilities in Canada are used to make products in many sectors, including food, medicine, transportation and personal care. For example, the robust Canadian housing industry is serviced by our STYROFOAM™ brand insulation production facilities in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Toronto, Ontario and Varennes, Quebec. For more information about Dow Canada products, please see our Plants and Products page.

Our presence in Canada provides an economic multiplier effect, through purchases of raw materials, products, services, labour and technologies. As a global company, we try to find a responsible balance between supporting the local economy and actively keeping our costs to a minimum. In some areas, this means making purchases in bulk at a global level. By their nature, certain products and services, such as contract labour and maintenance activities, are purchased locally.

Each year, our operations in Alberta, Ontario and Quebec pay millions of dollars in taxes to all three levels of government. These amounts are in addition to our community investment contributions, which support local economic, social and environmental sustainability initiatives.
