Dow Automotive  (formerly Gurit-Essex (UK) Limited) was set up in 1977 as a warehousing operation to import and distribute highly advanced chemical bonding and sealing products from the parent company's plant in Switzerland. These products were supplied to all the major motor manufacturers in the UK, including Ford, Jaguar, Austin Rover, Rolls Royce and Vauxhall.

In 1988 Gurit-Essex (UK) Limited commissioned it's manufacturing facility, consisting of one mixer and one drier, at the Gresham Road site and became the first company to produce high quality polyurethane adhesive in the UK. In 1991 to meet the increasing demand, a second mixer and drier were installed at Gresham Road and the St. Georges Way site was acquired to accommodate warehousing and administration. A reactor was installed in 1992 and pre-polymer manufacture commenced.

In 2005 manufacturing was consolidated to Dow Automotive's Freienbach site in Switzerland and Gresham Road site closed. In July 2009 the  Technical Services & Development laboratory was consolidated to Dow Automotive's Horgen site in Switzerland. St Georgres Way site remains to accommodate Sales Admininstration and Warehousing
