The site has been an industrial location since 1914, when it was taken over for the manufacture of munitions during World War I. It then became a centre for tar distillery, and most recently a chemical facility.

There has been a chemical plant on the site since the 1950's, and the site first became known as Mitchell Cotts in 1976. It went through two changes of ownership before becoming part of Dow in June 2001 through its acquisition of Ascot plc.

The site manufactures: pyrethroids, active pharmaceutical ingredients and intermediates:

  • Permethrin: insecticide used in applications as pet collars to kill fleas
  • Permethrin BPC: High purity product used in headlice shampoos, scabies creams.
  • Travoprost/Prostaglandin: for use in the prescribed drug Travatan**. A drug sold for the treatment of Glaucoma.
