Dow first came to King's Lynn in 1957 when a joint venture (Dow Agrochemicals) was formed with an existing company. In 1960 the DOWPON* plant was officially opened by HRH Duke of Edinburgh. This plant was decommissioned in 1983.
The emulsion polymers plant was built in 1967. More than £4 million was invested in the plant in 1995 to upgrade and replace the infrastructure. 1968 saw the completion of the first STYROFOAM* Plant and in 1971 the PELASPAN-PAC* plant was built. In 1993, this plant was replaced with one of the most modern STYROFOAM* Plants in the world. In 1978 there was a major investment in the production of DURSBAN* and in 1985 the herbicides plant was opened to produce STARANE*. The plant was decommissioned following the move of production to Drusenheim, France.
The 75 acre site is on the northern side of town, on the banks of the River Great Ouse. As well as Dow manufacturing, Dow AgroSciences also have a presence on site with Field Trials facilities.
King's Lynn presently runs three manufacturing plants:
Building Materials (Fabricated Products)
Emulsion Polymers
Insecticides & Fungicides (Crop Protection Systems)
