Lamani Higher Primary SchoolThe Lamani Higher Primary School is located in Middledrift in the Eastern Cape Province, approximately 60km from the Dow AgroSciences site in Berlin. When Bill Stavropoulos, Dow Chemical Company's chairman visited South Africa in February 2000, South Africa's former state president, Nelson Mandela posed a request to him for the renovation of Lamani Higher Primary School. The informal classrooms have since been demolished to make way for seven new classrooms, twelve additional toilet facilities, staff room, principal's office, computer room and a laboratory. The construction company, which is owned by a local community member, used STYROFOAM* donated by Dow in the construction of the school. Styrofoam is an insulating product produced by Dow and used in the construction of homes as well as in other structures. When Dow AgroSciences, Berlin experienced a retrenchment program in early 1999, some of the retrenchees who live in or near Middledrift were given an opportunity to work at the school during the construction period, thus fulfilling Dow's commitment to employees and the community. The official dedication of the school took place on Friday, March 16th 2001, and was opened by Deputy President Jacob Zuma, on behalf of former President Nelson Mandela. Dow's senior executives as well as Willie Davis (Dow Board member) attended the ceremony. ®™*Trademark of The Dow Chemical Company ("Dow") or an affiliated company of Dow.
