Dow Fabric & Surface Care at CESIO 2008: Formulating for a Lighter Environmental Footprint Midland, MI - June 13, 2008 At CESIO 2008, to be held in Paris, Palais de Congrès, June 22 to 25, scientists from Dow Fabric & Surface Care will present papers and posters on developing cleaning formulations that leave a lighter environmental footprint, yet offer performance benefits. In line with the consumer trend for “greener” cleaners, there is a drive to change cleaning formulations using natural, bio-renewable raw materials. While many of these new formulation ingredients offer excellent performance profiles, they present new challenges in formulation design and optimization, particularly in view of the need for more concentrated cleaners that reduce shipping weight and packaging materials. To address this market need, Dow Fabric & Surface Care has recently launched ECOSURF™ SA Surfactants, a new generation of biodegradable surfactants based on renewable seed-oil. They offer enhanced soil removal at the same concentration levels and excellent formulation flexibility for concentrates. To help brand owners develop “greener” cleaners on the tight timelines today’s markets demand, Dow Fabric & Surface Care is using Rapid Formulation Development methodology to deliver target formulations quickly and effectively. Using automated chemical testing and property measurement combined with computer modeling, this methodology speeds initial evaluations and rapidly tests hundreds of formulation variations for real-world performance, allowing prediction of formulation feasibility and stability. This helps brand owners respond to market trends more quickly with a robust formulation and a label claim addressing consumers’ appetite for high-performing cleaners with an excellent environmental profile.
