Dow Announces Global Launch and Commercial Availability of ETHOCEL™ High Productivit
A Solvent-Free Advanced Productivity Technology for Barrier Membrane Coatings
Dow Pharma & Food Solutions, a business unit of The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW), today announced the official global launch and commercial availability of ETHOCEL™ High Productivity (HP) a high productivity ethylcellulose polymer for multiparticulate and taste-masking applications, designed specifically for use with rotor coater systems. The product is commercially available exclusively through Colorcon Inc. (Colorcon), as part of the Dow and Colorcon Controlled Release Alliance.
“The global commercial launch of ETHOCEL™ HP is an exciting development for our customers, who continue to demand more efficient, sustainable solutions to help improve their products and their manufacturing,” said Marc Van Gerwen, business director for Dow Pharma & Food Solutions. “From idea to market – all in less than two years – ETHOCEL™ HP is another example of Dow’s cutting edge innovation and speed to market.”
A more sustainable alternative for pharmaceutical companies, dry coating with ETHOCEL™ HP offers shorter coating times for barrier membranes, at higher efficiencies and without the need for solvents. Use of ETHOCEL™ HP has shown a step improvement in coating time, proving to be 70% faster than traditional solvent and aqueous spray coating systems, with consistent 98-99% coating efficiency in lab trials conducted by Dow. Removing the solvent from the coating process allows opportunities for cost reduction and improved operational safety.
“ETHOCEL™ HP is a safe, fast, efficient polymer solution for formulators developing multiparticulate applications with rotor coater systems,” said Avani Patel, Dow Pharma and Food Solutions Global R&D Director. “It can help customers improve productivity from R&D through scale-up to manufacturing.”
, together in the Controlled Release Alliance, bring joint resources in polymer and formulation expertise to accelerate your pharmaceutical product development efforts and reach markets throughout the world. Colorcon has exclusive, global sales and distribution rights for Dow products used in controlled release applications, including ETHOCEL™ HP.
“ETHOCEL™ HP complements our existing product portfolio for barrier membrane applications, which includes the traditional ETHOCEL™ grades, as well as an aqueous-based system, Surelease, ethylcellulose dispersion type B NF,” said Jayesh Parmar, General Manager for Dow products at Colorcon. He adds, “by providing a solvent-free solution we are able to offer our customers a more efficient coating process and extend the range of technical solutions we provide.”
Dow partnered with Freund-Vector, one of the leading designers and manufacturers of processing equipment and services for powders, tablets and other solid forms, during the development of this product to ensure that ETHOCEL™ HP was tailor-made for the rotor coater technology.
