Dow Partners with GLAAD to Take A Stand Against Bullying

Eight out of 10 lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth experience harassment while at school; nearly 65 percent report that they feel unsafe. Spirit Day takes a stand against bullying in all its forms, and also highlights the disproportionate rates of bullying faced by LGBT youth.

On October 15, Dow will join millions of teachers, workplaces, celebrities, media outlets and students in the U.S. and around the world who support and participate in Spirit Day by “going purple” on social media and by wearing purple, a color that symbolizes spirit on the rainbow flag.

Spirit Day began in 2010, following a string of high-profile suicide deaths of gay teens, and now occurs every year on the third Thursday in October, during National Bullying Prevention Month, and has become the most visible day of support for LGBT youth.

How You Can Support

The concept is simple: Take the pledge to ‘go purple' for Spirit Day on October 15. Wear purple to stand up against bullying and as a message of solidarity and acceptance to LGBT youth. You can also create personalized images or share postcards via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other channels to amplify the dialogue. Some common messages everyone is encouraged to share include:

  • I am proud to wear purple for Spirit Day in a united stand against bullying and to show my support for LGBT youth #spirit day
  • Simply by wearing purple on October 15, we can help tell every young person that it's okay to be who you are #spirit day
  • No one should be bullied or called names simply for being who they are. That's why I'm wearing purple for Spirit Day October 15 #spirit day

Take the Spirit Day pledge today, and learn about more ways to get involved.
