Advancing the Sport of Cycling
As an Official Partner of the U.S. Paralympic cycling team, Dow has provided R&D and materials science support to help prepare the team’s equipment for optimal performance. The U.S. team is No. 1 in the world in track, road and overall International Cycling Union standings, and this year's 27-strong roster includes nine Paralympians and five reigning world champions.
Recently, the U.S. Paralympic cycling team, in partnership with Dow, looked to accelerate this innovation.
Offering a long-term technical solution for the team, focus was put on the footrests of handcycles. A static component of the handcycle, traditional competitive footrests, made using bent aluminum tubes, cause high aerodynamic drag as the athlete's foot is exposed to oncoming air.
Through design, modeling, prototyping, fabrication and application testing, custom engineered next generation footrests for the U.S. Paralympic cycling team’s handcycles are ready for competition. Over the course of a race, the footrests are designed to provide a safe, secure and aerodynamic enclosure for the athlete's feet.
Congratulations to the 2016 U.S. Paralympic Cycling Team for bringing home the most medals in its history from the Paralympic Games, a remarkable 18 podium finishes.
