Fourteen individuals and one team across the U.S. have been selected as recipients of the 2004 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Recognition Award which is co-sponsored by The Dow Chemical Company, Dow Corning Corporation and Chemical Bank & Trust Company of Midland, Michigan. Established in 1987, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Recognition Award publicly recognizes individuals or groups who, through their efforts to improve race relations and the quality of life in our communities as well as in our corporations, have helped to keep Dr. King's famous "dream" of racial harmony and equality alive for a new generation of Americans.
Among the winners, six (6) Dow Promise volunteers were announced as Recognition Award winners at a ceremony held in Midland, Michigan. Three award recipients from Midland were recognized for their involvement in the HOSTS (Help One Student to Succeed) program at A. A. Claytor Elementary in Saginaw Michigan; two award recipients from California were recognized for their after-school activities with East County Boys and Girls Club and Firefighters Youth Academy of Pittsburg, and the African American Academic Achievement Committee (4AC) of Antioch California; and a Plaquemine, Louisiana employee was recognized for his work with middle and high school schools in Port Allen and West Baton Rouge.
Additionally, participants with the Auburn Hills Michigan African American Network (AAN) at Dow Automotive were recognized with the same award for their group efforts in making a positive difference with a number of community activities in Detroit.
