FILMTEC™ Reverse Osmosis (RO) membrane elements – made available through Dow Water Solutions, a business unit of Dow – are used in the Tampa Bay Seawater Desalination Plant in Florida. It is the largest seawater desalination plant in the U.S., helping produce drinking water for 2.4 million people through a total of 25 million gallons of clean water per day.
FILMTEC membrane elements are highly resistant to biological matter. With adequate maintenance the FILMTEC membrane elements can provide a useful life span of over five years. FILMTEC membrane elements offer extremely effective salt rejection to meet drinking water specifications, which mandate less than 200 parts per million of chloride ions.
The advanced membrane technology enables communities to broaden their water sourcing options to deal with drought conditions, and FILMTEC membranes continue to play a part in making water desalination an economically viable and energy-efficient way to harvest and treat seawater.
Dow is committed to developing and perfecting technology to provide alternative sources of water for human consumption in both the developed and developing world.
This kind of innovative thinking is just one example of how the Human Element at Dow is contributing to more sustainable communities; for more, please visit http://www.dow.com/commitments/studies/index.htm.
