Dow Advances Sustainable Chemistry with Renewable Propylene Glycol

Dow continues to advance sustainable chemistry through new and enhanced products, processes and services.

In March 2007, Dow introduced Propylene Glycol Renewable (PGR). PGR is made from glycerine generated during the manufacture of biodiesel, a diesel-fuel alternative produced from vegetable oil.

PGR will be used in such applications as unsaturated polyester resins (UPR) for boat hulls and bathroom fixtures as well as aircraft deicers, antifreeze for automobiles, recreational vehicles and marine and heavy-duty laundry detergents.

Producing PGR from glycerine will reduce Dow’s dependence on and use of fossil fuels and will consume less water than conventional propylene glycol.

This is just one example of how the Human Element at Dow is contributing to more sustainable chemistry solutions; for more, please visit http://www.dow.com/commitments/studies/index.htm
